Hammond in 300 MPH Crash |
Top Gear presenter Richard Hammond much adored and frequently on
the receiving end of Jeremy Clarkson's 'short' jokes came within
inches of his life yesterday whilst filming for the programme in a
"rocket powered dragster" on an airfield in York
Last night Richard Hammond had been described as "critical" whilst
being treated in a neurological unit of a hospital in Leeds after
being airlifted following a
crash travelling close to speeds of 300 mph.
In the wake of the tragic loss of TV presenter 'wild man' Steve
Erwin and the concern shown for his family by the Australian
television network, I find myself bewildered at the statement given by Top Gear
magazine editor Michael Harvey to BBC News:
"This wasn't a high performance car, this wasn't a road car, this
was a rocket powered dragster which bears absolutely no relation to
the kind of cars which are the main fodder of the Top Gear programme
- this was a car that clearly contained its own risks.''
Of course I'm sure Mr Harvey meant somewhere in that statement he
hoped that Richard would make a speedy recovery and his thoughts
where with his wife and children...
Top Gear is much respected and considered to be at the leading edge
of motoring magazines both published and televised but in the past
has been criticised for spending too much time covering high priced,
high performance cars that in reality a far from the reach of
general public.
Its hardly surprising that this is the case when at least one of the
programmes executives is distanced from reality to the point that
protecting viewing figures and possible legal action takes
precedence when making a statement regarding the critical injuries
sustained to one of his employees whilst at work.
On behalf of myself and my colleagues I would like to send my
thoughts out to Richards family in this difficult time and wish
Richard a speedy recovery.Otis Ellery |
